A pause does not erase a habit. It changes the sequence by placing a small, unavoidable interval between the cue and the next session. In a 2026 randomized trial of a different intervention, 70 iPhone users received customizable full-screen reminders after self-chosen social-app intervals while retaining the option to continue.
The intervention group reduced daily time on its most problematic social app by about 29 minutes during the short study. Results for problematic social-media use and self-efficacy were mixed, and the authors highlighted the limited sample and duration.
The responsible conclusion is not “a timer fixes phone addiction.” It is that well-timed, autonomy-preserving friction deserves testing—and that deeper habits may require environmental, reflective, or social changes too.
